Admiring the monuments of the Acropolis

Propylaia is the impressive entrance to the Acropolis on the west side which is the only accessible one. At the south end of the Propylaia lies the small, elegant temple of Apteros Nike (Wingless Victory), the goddess whose wings were cut off so she could never leave the city of Athens. This is the only temple of the Acropolis fully econstructed with its original material.    |     The Parthenon is dedicated to goddess Athena Parthenos (Virgin). Its impressive Doric order is synonymous to architectural perfection signifying the peak of classic architecture. The magnificent temple took 10 years to build and 15 to sculpt the decoration. In 1687, in an attempt to seize the Acropolis back from the Turks, Venetians destroyed it and caused most of the damage and ruins seen today.   |    The Erechtheion, to the north of the Parthenon, is dedicated to both goddess Athena and god Poseidon Erechtheus, the old patron of the city. The temple is famous for the 6 tall maidens, the Caryatids, holding the south side of the temple on their heads. The 6 statues there today are copiesof the originals, 4 of which are kept in the Museum of the Acropolis while the one looted by Lord Elgin, is on display at the British Museum.   |     The New Museum of the Acropolis, at the foot of the Acropolis Hill features exhibits from all periods in the long history of the holy rock.
